A Precious Commodity

In today’s competitive market, business success depends on information. Whether accessing information down the hall or across your wide area network, business-critical applications rely on network performance to access information in a timely manner. For enterprises, governments and educational institutions, bandwidth is a precious commodity that literally controls the flow of information and determines their business success. This is no less true for service providers, who seek to maximize average revenue per user (ARPU) while extending services and enlarging their customer bases.

Despite the critical importance of networking resources such as bandwidth, many organizations exercise more control over resources such as pencils and paper clips. This omission can enable small groups of users to monopolize shared bandwidth resources and bring business-critical applications for inventory, customer service or online sales to a grinding halt.

On some service provider networks, as few as 5% of the users have been found to consume up to 80% of the available bandwidth; on some enterprise networks, recreational activities consume up to 40% of bandwidth.

Allot's Layer-7 traffic management enables you to block, limit, or guarantee bandwidth resources so that your network can support your business goals.

The Challenge

Everyone agrees on the importance of resource management, but without a window into the network or a means of management, optimizing your WAN is beyond reach. Many erroneously believe that the choice is simply between suffering from low performance or expanding the network to stay ahead of demand. But signing a “blank check” for additional bandwidth only masks the underlying challenge: to allocate your network resources according to your business priorities.

Networking needs and business priorities depend upon your type of network and the applications you use. Needs and priorities can vary by department, individual, location, or even time of day. Some applications, like Internet telephony (voice over IP) or videoconferencing, are extremely delay-sensitive. Access to centralized databases is less time-sensitive, but slow response may reduce productivity or disrupt customer service. Email or FTP traffic is not delay-sensitive; users rarely notice if an email takes an extra second to arrive or whether a large FTP download takes an extra minute or two.

When it comes to identifying network traffic, external appearances are increasingly misleading; applications, both legitimate and malicious, tend to be smarter than they appear. You need deep packet inspection in order to control so-called “port-hopping” applications or to distinguish between authentic and disguised traffic types bypassing your firewall.

If you provide networking services, you face similar issues–with an even smaller margin of error. A lack of bandwidth control at the subscriber level will directly affect your profits. Large-scale network abuse or uncontrolled peer-to-peer (P2P) usage combined with improper bandwidth management can adversely affect your customers’ quality of experience and imperil the profitability of your business.

The Allot Solution

Fortunately, there is a practical way to monitor and manage the flow of information throughout your network. The Allot Communications family of fail-safe traffic management solutions and products gives you more than just a window into your network.

It provides powerful tools that you need to monitor, manage, shape and control the way you and your customers access your network. From prioritizing business-critical traffic to limiting personal use to stopping undesirable access, Allot Communications has the tools that every type of business needs for optimising their wide area network.

Enterprises and Government

Managing any size network can be a particular challenge. Our NetEnforcer® product line gives you enterprise-wide visibility and Layer-2 to -7 control over your traffic. Use Allot products to identify congestion and provide required levels of quality of service (QoS). Use deep packet inspection to allocate more networking resources to your Citrix-published applications than to others. Block eDonkey traffic disguised as standard web traffic while permitting access to HTML web pages. Enable smooth performance of business applications such as Internet telephony (VoIP); improve application response time and provide a first line of defense against malicious traffic and DDoS attacks.

Service Providers

Our NetEnforcer service-control solutions allow service providers to precisely manage traffic crossing the LAN/WAN boundary. Use Allot products to maximize your average revenue per user, controlling P2P traffic and providing acceptable levels of service to a larger number of subscribers. Use powerful accounting tools to bill your customers for advanced services and meet written, quantifiable commitments (“service level agreements”). Use Allot’s carrier-grade devices for complex networking tasks at multi-gigabit speeds and provide accurate traffic management for tens of thousands of subscribers.

Educational Solutions

Colleges and universities can use NetEnforcer to manage Internet access for bandwidth-hungry students without compromising the resources needed for teaching and research. Use Allot to limit P2P music-sharing and non-essential applications at peak hours so you can allocate bandwidth to enhance the performance of mission-critical applications. Create service level agreements (SLAs) for classes of users and offer ISP-style service packages for profit or to manage consumption.

What They Say About Allot

“The Allot NetEnforcer® reduced our bandwidth consumption by more than 1 Mbps and saved us more than $3000 per month.”
- Jeff Levy, Senior Network Engineer

“Thanks to Allot, we were able to downsize the incoming CIR on six links. The move saved RRCM 5% of its total monthly WAN bill.”
- Sigbjorn Pilskog, Network Administrator

“Our network supports 230 sites that use Web, email, peer-to-peer, voice and video... With the NetEnforcer’s ability to shape our network traffic at Gigabit speeds, Allot is clearly in a class of its own.”
- Mark Dyer, Internet Services Coordinator

“The NetEnforcer® showed us that 80-90% of the student traffic was KaZaA. After we used the NetEnforcer to throttle KaZaA, we actually got a few compliments.”
- Andy Jack, Network Team

“By discovering and limiting eDonkey and other P2P uploads, we instantly reduced traffic consumption by 150 Mbps and reduced costs by 10,000 Euros (US$ 12,000) per month!”
- Heiko Liebscher, CTO

“The NetEnforcer's very precise shaping allowed it to pass the traffic at the exact rate needed by the IP encapsulator. That is critical since the IP encapsulator cannot handle any congestion.”
- Stefano Frass?, CTO

About Allot

Allot’s high-performance traffic management solutions are deployed by some of the world’s largest enterprises, universities and service providers to improve application performance, reduce network costs, and guarantee the successful deployment of business-critical applications.

In enterprise networks, Allot’s highly scalable solutions help network managers ensure quality of service (QoS) by linking business policies to specific network actions that improve user productivity and contain networking costs.

In service provider networks, Allot’s QoS and service level agreement (SLA) enforcement capabilities maximize return on investment by managing over-subscription, throttling P2P traffic and delivering tiered rate plans along with a host of innovative service capabilities.
