Compromised Multiply.com accounts used to host malware laden spam payloads; new wave of spam using likely stolen personal emails to make messages appear “legitimate”

San Diego, CA – 8/12/2010 – St. Bernard’s Red Condor security team today issued a warning of a new sophisticated email malware threat that is disguised as misdirected personal emails with executable attachments. The spam messages, which have a variety of subject lines, including “You are in invited to another show!”, “FW: Resume as discussed” and “FW: Car & Car loan” appear to consist of content that was likely stolen from compromised email accounts and computers and appear to have multiple connections with the ongoing one-click plug-and-play (PNP) malware campaigns that Red Condor has been monitoring the past several months. Red Condor also identified a possible source of the spam payloads at compromised accounts on the social media site, Multiply.com. The executables in this new campaign have been identified as TR/Dropper.Gen / FraudTool.Win32.AVSoft (v) / Malware-Cryptor.Win32.Limpopo. At the time this campaign was blocked, only 4 out of 41 anti-virus engines had detected the malware.

Among the commonalities between this new spate of spam and the one-click malware campaigns are the following:

Both are being used to distribute similar malware strains (Bredolab for the attached executables and Zeus for the drive-by) both of which are associated with Fake AV applications at some point in the infection cycle. Although, because these are Trojans, any cocktail of malware can be downloaded and installed once a foothold into a victim’s system is achieved.

Both employ new strains of malware that are for the most part undetected by AV engines.

Both appear to be primarily designed to compromise computers instead of advertising goods and services.

Both employ novel social engineering hooks such as spoofing brands (for PNP) or “misdirected personal communications” to entice recipients to perform the call to action.

The strongest link is the co-occurrence of the payloads showing up on a narrow set of compromised blog accounts at the free blog hosting site, Multiply.com.

“It’s common to see spam show up on blog sites, but this particular situation is different,” commented Jim Sackman, vice president of engineering for email security at St. Bernard. “These payloads are not showing up on other blog sites, and there is very little in the way of other types of spam in these posts that one typically encounters with comment spam and black-hat SEO tricks. It appears that these blog postings provide a mechanism for distributing content to spam-spewing botnets.”

Sackman continued, “A particularly disturbing emergence with this new wave of campaigns is the use of what appear to be actual emails, presumably lifted from the hard drives of compromised computers and email accounts. Dozens of messages have been selected that in some way refer to an attachment, as is typical in normal person-toperson email communications. These are then employed by the spammers to craft a legitimate looking email and may convince the recipient to view the attachment, which will install rogue software on their computers.”

The new spam campaign was filtered by one of Red Condor’s sender reputation-based filters. As with all threats captured by Red Condor, once identified, campaigns are quarantined and reviewed as rules are written and automatically distributed to Red Condor’s antispam appliance and Hosted Service customers.

Orange, Calif. – August 10, 2010 – M86 Security, the global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, today announced that customers of one of the biggest financial institutions have fallen victim to a sophisticated attack by cybercriminals using Web-based malware to rob money via the bank’s online banking system. Researchers at the M86’s Security Labs detected a command & control center located in Eastern Europe targeting one of the biggest financial institution’s UK customer accounts.

Unprotected customers were infected by a Trojan – which managed to avoid detection by traditional Anti-Virus software – while browsing the Internet. The Trojan, a Zeus v3, steals the customer’s online banking ID and hijacks their online banking sessions. It then checks the account balance and, if the account balance is bigger than GBP 800 value, it issues a money transfer transaction.

From July 5, the cyber criminals have successfully stolen GBP 675,000 (c. USD 1,077,000) and the attack is still progressing.

Company Enhances Hybrid Security Offering and Expands Cloud-Based Service Platform

SAN DIEGO, CA – 8/4/2010 – St. Bernard Software, Inc. (OTCBB: SBSW), a leader in Web security appliances, today announced the acquisition of substantially all assets of Red Condor Inc., the award-winning provider of fully managed email security solutions.

The acquisition builds upon the success of St. Bernard’s existing hybrid platform, which has served the SME market through a combination of high-performance appliances, software, and hosted security solutions. With the Web security market expected to grow to $2.3 billion by 2012, and the protection of leading applications such as email and messaging remaining a primary concern across global enterprises of all sizes, the acquisition of Red Condor’s managed security solutions is a natural extension of St. Bernard’s product portfolio and business strategy.

“This acquisition milestone is a truly exciting time for both St. Bernard and Red Condor as it creates great opportunities for growth with our shared hybrid security vision,” said Lou Ryan, President and CEO at St. Bernard. “The strategic match we have found in Red Condor establishes greater breadth and depth in our hosted, hybrid and on-premises options and increases the overall value to our customers and partners. With the integration of Red Condor’s carrier-grade technology and platform, we are perfectly positioned to accelerate our growth engine and work with an increasing and diversified base of customers across multiple security solutions.”

As a result of the acquisition, St. Bernard will gain over 1,900 new customers as well as Red Condor’s extensive ISP and MSP partner network. St. Bernard’s enhanced hybrid platform allows the company to extend new and unique value to subscribers of these previously underserved markets with a full suite of easy-to-use, cost-effective and scalable security solutions.

“Red Condor is widely recognized for the simplicity and scalability of its unique hybrid offerings,” continued Ryan. “The Red Condor platform and the vision behind it, dovetail perfectly with St. Bernard’s primary technology offering and reinforces our key attributes of value, simplicity, and performance.”

Founded in 2004, Red Condor has approximately 35 employees and is headquartered in Rohnert Park , California. The company’s hosted and hybrid email spam filtering solutions have garnered numerous industry awards and recognition, and most recently proved to outperform competitive spam filters in an independent test of email filter accuracy by Miercom. The report not only validated Red Condor’s hybrid technology offering, but also confirmed that the company had the highest block rate, zero false-positives and only one misclassified message for every 1,970 messages received during the one-week test.

WatchGuard XCS 170, 370 and 570 Now Provide Web Security Protection in Addition to Anti-spam and Data Loss Prevention (DLP); Unveils Compelling New Pricing on Several Models

SEATTLE – July 27, 2010. WatchGuard® Technologies, a global leader of business security solutions, today unveiled a major upgrade to its extensible content security (XCS) solutions specifically designed for small to medium sized businesses. Now WatchGuard XCS 170, 370 and 570 security appliances offer enterprise-grade web blocking security services in addition to having advanced e-mail protection, data loss prevention (DLP), spam, virus, spyware and malware protection. Furthermore, WatchGuard is lowering annual Web Security subscriptions for its XCS 770, 970 and 1170 appliances, and reducing prices across its XCS 370, 570 and 770 messaging appliances by up to 20 percent.

“Blended threats – attacks that use multiple sources, such as spam, viruses and malware-laden URLs – are becoming ubiquitous,” said Tim Helming, Director of Product Management at WatchGuard Technologies. “Having a spam firewall is not enough. Today, businesses need comprehensive security appliances that can thwart a multitude of threats, including the most pernicious of all, web-based payloads, such as spyware, keyloggers and other forms of malware.”

Ideal for SMBs and mid-market organizations, WatchGuard XCS 170, 370 and 570 appliances provide e-mail security protection, which includes advanced shielding against spam, phishing, viruses, malware and other forms of e-mail based threats. Additionally, they all sport advanced management and reporting capabilities, which include archiving, on-box reporting, messaging logs, customizable granular policies and reports, TLS encryption and message redundancy.

Now able to deliver WatchGuard’s Web Security service, these same appliances can actively protect against sophisticated web-based attacks. With it, administrators can manage website access to foster stronger security and mitigation of risky web surfing activities. WatchGuard XCS Web Security also blocks malicious sites to keep networks protected from risky web content. Furthermore, it conserves network bandwidth, prevents legal liability from inappropriate content, and increases employee productivity while guarding networks against malicious attacks from rogue websites.

Adding to a complete and comprehensive defense-in-depth posture, all WatchGuard XCS appliances that run the Web Security features gain the added protection of Reputation Enabled Defense, an innovative cloud-based security service that provides additional web protection. Reputation Enabled Defense gives businesses and their employees superior protection against viruses, malware, spyware, keyloggers, botnets and other web-based threats, in addition to faster, more productive web surfing experiences.

Reputation Enabled Defense delivers highly secure web browsing experiences via a cloud-based reputation lookup that scores URLs as either good, bad or unknown. The lookup leverages a dynamic global database that aggregates data from multiple feeds, including industry-leading anti-virus engines. URLs with bad reputations are immediately blocked. URLs with unknown reputations are scanned by WatchGuard XCS appliances to ensure that they are malware free, and URLs with good reputations are accelerated through the WatchGuard appliances. This significantly boosts web traffic performance over the network while keeping employees safe from drive-by-downloads and other web-based attacks. WatchGuard gives administrators the ability to configure reputation thresholds, which allows businesses to optimize and control IT risk management.

Users will appreciate improved web surfing speeds with Reputation Enabled Defense. With it, browsing is accelerated by eliminating the need to scan all web traffic for threats. Up to 50 percent of URL scanning can be avoided without compromising security, resulting in greater throughput at the gateway and more efficient use of appliance resources.

22nd July 2010 – London: Mimecast®, a leading supplier of cloud-based email security, continuity, policy control and archiving, today announced the results of the second annual Mimecast Cloud Adoption Survey, an annual research report examining attitudes to cloud computing services amongst IT decision-makers in UK and US businesses. The survey, conducted by independent research firm, Loudhouse, reveals that a majority of organisations (51 percent) are now using some form of cloud computing service, and the levels of satisfaction amongst those companies is high across the board. Conversely, companies not yet using cloud services cite concerns around cost and security.

The survey shows that of those those businesses using cloud services, 74 percent say that the cloud has alleviated internal resource pressures, and 72 percent report an improved end-user experience. 73 percent have managed to reduced their infrastructure costs, while 57 percent of say that the cloud has resulted in improved security. However, not everyone is convinced. 74 percent of IT departments still believe that there is always a trade-off between cost and IT security and 62 percent say that storing data on servers outside of the business is always a risk.

Highlights from the research:

Cloud services are now the norm:
• The majority of organisations now use cloud-based services. The report found 51 percent of organisations are now using at least one cloud-based application. Adoption rates amongst US businesses are slightly ahead of the UK with 56 percent of respondents using at least one cloud-based application, compared to 50 percent in the UK. This is a significant rise from the 2009 survey, when just 36 percent of US businesses were using cloud services.
• Two thirds of businesses are considering adopting cloud computing. Encouragingly for vendors, 66 percent are now considering adopting cloud-based applications in the future. Again, US businesses are ahead of the UK in their attitudes to the cloud with 70 percent considering cloud services, compared to 60 percent in the UK.
• Email, security and storage are the most popular cloud services. 62 percent of the organisations that use cloud computing are using a cloud-based email application. Security and storage are the next most popular, used by 52 percent and 50 percent of organisations with at least one cloud-based service respectively. Email services are most popular with mid-size businesses (250-1,000 employees) with 70 percent of these organisations using the cloud to support this function. Smaller businesses (under 250 employees) are most likely to use the cloud for security services, with larger enterprises (over 1,000 employees) most likely to make use of cloud storage services.

Cloud attitudes split between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’:
• Existing cloud users are satisfied. Security is not considered to be an issue by existing cloud users: 57 percent say that moving data to the cloud has resulted in better security, with 58 percent saying it has given them better control of their data. 73 percent of current cloud users say it has reduced the cost of their IT infrastructure and 74 percent say it has alleviated the internal resource pressures upon the department.
• Security fears are still a barrier. Three quarters (74 percent) of IT departments agreed with the statement ‘there is always a trade-off between cost and IT security’, suggesting that many organisations feel cloud solutions are less secure than the more expensive, on-premise alternatives, simply due to their lesser cost. 62 percent believe that storing data on servers outside of the business is a significant security risk.
• IT is concerned that adopting cloud will not initially result in cost savings. 58 percent of respondents thought that replacing legacy IT solutions will almost always cost more than the benefits of new IT.
• Cloud concerns stem from a lack of clarity. One reason for the negative perceptions of cloud services among non-users seems to be a lack of clear communication from the industry itself. 54 percent of respondents said the potential benefits of cloud delivery models are overstated by the IT industry.

Supporting quotes:
“It is great to see that cloud computing has now been embraced by the majority of organisations,” commented Peter Bauer, CEO and co-founder of Mimecast. “The fact that more than 50 percent of businesses are now using cloud-based applications – with two thirds currently considering adopting them – is hugely encouraging for the industry and a clear indication that IT is increasingly willing to innovate in order to get better value for money, increased reliability and greater control of their data.”

“The research shows that there is a clear divide within the IT industry on the issue of cloud computing,” commented Peter Bauer, CEO and co-founder of Mimecast. “While those organisations that have embraced cloud services are clearly reaping the rewards, there are still a number who are put off by the ‘cloud myths’ around data security and the cost of replacing legacy IT. It is now up to cloud vendors to educate businesses and end users to ensure that these concerns do not overshadow the huge potential cost, security and performance benefits that cloud computing can bring.”

ISTE 2010 – Colorado Convention Center – Booth #662

Denver, CO – JUNE 28, 2010 – M86 Security, the global expert in real-time threat protection for Web and email solutions, introduces its award-winning Secure Web Gateway at ISTE 2010 to K-12 organizations.

With the continual rise in behind-the-scenes malware attacks by cybercriminals, combined with the challenge of schools utilizing more Web 2.0 technologies to deliver and enhance the learning environment, the need for the multilayered protection that the M86 Secure Web Gateway provides has become crucial. In order to protect both the network and students from malicious cybercriminals and still open up the network to allow for 21st century online educational tools, districts must implement a secure Web gateway with the technology to analyze and detect the intent of malicious code in real-time. In addition, the gateway must be able to also deliver safe web pages to students and staff with malicious content stripped out. This allows for a safe learning environment and closes the window of vulnerability.

“A new generation of malware has emerged in the Web 2.0 learning environment exposing school networks to new attacks that evade traditional signature-based prevention technologies,” said Bradley Anstis, vice president technical strategy, M86 Security. “Currently 84% of malware attacks are from legitimate Web 2.0 sites. The M86 Secure Web Gateway is a critical tool for leveraging the full benefits of the Internet and Web 2.0 technologies in a protected learning environment.”

The M86 Secure Web Gateway protects against attacks such as those suffered by school districts in 2009, including cases involving the theft of district funds through unauthorized online transfers; network disabling attacks which cause districts to experience loss of time, productivity, and critical network access during the cyber attack and recovery period; and attacks in which data is stolen or compromised putting schools out of compliance with FERPA regulations.

The M86 Secure Web Gateway provides small to large districts with vital protection from Web-based threats including Trojans, spyware, scareware, botnets, blended threats and other malware. At the core of the M86 Secure Web Gateway is M86’s Vital Web Security Suite™, a group of complementary, patented technologies that include Real-time Code Analysis, Vulnerability Anti.dote™ and Dynamic Web Repair™, which together provide the most accurate and comprehensive real-time Web security protection available.

Key benefits of the M86 Secure Web Gateway include:

Delivering a safer learning environment while capitalizing on Web 2.0 technologies

Protecting from security breaches and financial loss through cyber theft

Mitigating legal liabilities and/or damage to an institution’s reputation

“As savvy schools continue to use the Internet and Web 2.0 technologies to deliver a superior learning experience, they understand the need to protect both students and school networks from the onslaught of ever-evolving malware threats that reside on the Web,” said Nate Dhamers, director of technology services, Glenbard Township High Schools, Dist. #87. “We are pleased to see that M86 continues to work with districts to provide innovative Web security solutions.”

Sydney, Australia – May 25, 2010 – M86 Security, the global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, has received a Highly Commended award for the SC Magazine Product of the Year category at AusCERT 2010 for its Secure Web Gateway product.

“We are delighted to achieve Highly Commended for SC Magazine Product of the Year at AusCERT. It is a great achievement and speaks to the effectiveness of the product to be recognised so soon after its release into the market,” said Jeremy Hulse, Vice President APAC, M86 Security.

“Employees are now more dependent on the Web for research, information or collaboration with suppliers and customers. M86 Security Labs discovered that legitimate Web sites now comprise the majority of infected sites. Our Secure Web Gateway solution offers peace of mind, protecting organisations against malware and crimeware in real time without hindering staff access to the internet. This enables the workforce the freedom to do what they need to as part of their job,” Mr. Hulse continued.

The M86 Secure Web Gateway is a proactive, appliance-based solution that provides real-time Web security, increases productivity, ensures compliance and controls bandwidth. Using patented real-time malware detection technology, URL filtering and anti-virus scanning, the solution protects organisations from the threats associated with Web 2.0 applications.

The key differentiator of the M86 Secure Web Gateway product is its patented real-time code analysis engine which scans each and every piece of incoming and outgoing Web content, including HTTP/HTTPS information. The intent of the code is analyzed for criminal or dubious action in real time regardless of its originating URL and without signature matching. This enables it to detect and block crimeware, targeted attacks and other malicious web content even when the malware is hidden in SSL traffic.

In addition, the Dynamic Web Repair feature enables users safe and unhindered access to the internet. Malicious scripts on an HTML page are seamlessly removed and the safe Web content are repaired and delivered to users without having to block the entire Web page; ensuring continued worker productivity.

M86’s Secure Web Gateway has already received a number of international industry accolades and 5-star ratings. The company has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Visionaries quadrant of the research firm’s report on Secure Web Gateway (SWG). i

Sydney – May 20, 2010. WatchGuard® Technologies, a global leader of business security solutions, today announced that it has been named Vendor of The Year at the 2010 Secure Computing (Australia) Awards for outstanding achievement in information technology (IT) security.

The award was announced at this week’s annual AusCERT conference on the Gold Coast and recognises the vendor which has increased customer satisfaction, improved profitability or IT security, been a leader in innovation and is seen as an influencer of industry best practice.

“The overall high and uniform levels of satisfaction among its Australian users and channel partners influenced the panel’s decision to hand WatchGuard the gong for the SC Awards Vendor of the Year. In the past year, the vendor has refitted its local channel programme to strengthen its partners against the headwinds caused by the global economic slowdown while working to integrate its Borderware acquisition into the fabric of its lineup and refining its offerings,” said Nate Cochrane, Editor-in-Chief, SC Magazine Australia. “The SC Awards panel was impressed with the depth of WatchGuard’s Australian presence in a broad range of industries and the public sector.”

The award was adjudicated by an expert panel of consultants, chief technology officers, lab directors and former law enforcement officers. These judges are hand-picked by SC Magazine’s editorial team for their breadth of knowledge and experience in the information security industry. They include Keith Price, National Director of the Australian Information Security Association; Joel Hatton, Senior Computer Security Analyst with AusCERT; Ajoy Ghosh, Chief Information Security Officer at Logica; Tim Ebringer, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft; and security industry consultants, including Phil Kernick who holds CISSP and Cisco CCSP security certifications, and Nigel Phair, Senior Fellow within the Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention.

Scott Robertson, Regional Director ANZ, WatchGuard Technologies, said, “We are both honoured and thrilled to win Vendor of the Year. This award is testament to the success of both our Australian channel partners and our employees in their combined ability to drive success for customers with our offering of high-performance security solutions that protect mission critical networks, application and data. The award validates what thousands of customers already benefit from in choosing WatchGuard – the best value, performance, capability and functionality for IT security needs.”

As the industry’s preeminent awards program, the annual SC Awards has recognised security’s key contributors and outstanding products for the past two years. The SC Awards honour the professionals, companies and products that help fend off the myriad of security threats confronted in today’s corporate world. Individuals, brands and solutions recognised in the program address not only the security challenges prominent today, but also the emerging threat landscape of tomorrow.

CRYPTO-MAS upgraded with Java based mobile phone token and SMS gateway

Increased functionality cements position of CRYPTO-MAS as the worlds leading
SaaS authentication service

27 April 2010, Bristol, UK: Authentication authority CRYPTOCard has unveiled a series of
innovative developments within its unique cloud-based authentication service CRYPTOMAS.
The company is making java based mobile phone tokens available with its global
managed authentication service as well as an SMS gateway feature, increasing the
overall functionality of the product in response to customer demand for mobile and
tokenless authentication solutions.

With the progressively prevalent risks to network security compounded by remote working
and social media, businesses are seeking ways to effectively secure digital identities but
at lower costs. While current tokenless solutions go someway to meeting this requirement
they can be a costly option. This new java-based offering on CRYPTO-MAS appropriately
secures network access while helping companies to reduce the overall cost of
authentication. It can be seamlessly added to any users’ Java based mobile phone. The
new release also includes a feature that delivers up to five One-Time Passwords (OTP) per
SMS message – ensuring that even in areas of poor mobile phone coverage an OTP is
always available to protect access.

A report by Goode Intelligence forecast that mobile phone-based authentication
products and services will generate $153 million in 2010 and that the market will grow to
almost $760 million in revenue by 2014. “Phone-based authentication is the fastest
growing segment of the market and this release extends CRYPTOCard’s leadership in
each of the three key areas – we have the widest SMS functionality; the only phone
based token on a SaaS authentication service and the widest back-end functionality for
service providers which allows us to be the lowest priced option on the market,”
commented Neil Hollister, CEO, CRYPTOCard. “CRYPTOCard is committed to leading the
tokenless revolution in strong authentication and these features demonstrate that
leadership”

The addition of an SMS gateway selection feature enhances the current SMS capability of
CRYPTO-MAS by allowing service providers and large enterprise customers to leverage
their own SMS message centres while still benefitting from reduced costs and increased
manageability and of course the distinct advantages of securing their network using
CRYPTO-MAS. The feature allows CRYPTO-MAS to be easily integrated into a service
provide infrastructure – further distancing it from other products available.

CRYPTO-MAS is the first Password-as-a-Service offering on the market and brings the
benefits of cloud-based services to the authentication space CRYPTO-MAS delivers a low
cost, ultra reliable platform that benefits from the widest and most innovative range of
tokens available on any cloud based authentication service. The benefits of CRYPTO-MAS
includes no upfront cost, no ongoing IT & resource overheads and an enterprise 99.999%
service level, all delivered in a utility-based pricing model.

CRYPTOCard was named Managed Service Provider of the Year by Network Computing
in both 2010 and 2009 for CRYPTO-MAS. The solution was also named the Most Innovative
Product 2009 in the Techworld Awards.

About CRYPTOCard
CRYPTOCard, the authentication authority, helps organizations mitigate the risk of identity
theft by using appropriate authentication to secure digital identities. Headquartered in
Canada and the UK, CRYPTOCard’s products are used by thousands of companies in

CRYPTOCard’s award-winning authentication platform benefits its users by delivering an
exceptionally low cost of ownership. The platform, available as a cloud based service or
server based application, offers unrivalled automated provisioning to reduce
management time by up to 90%, and an innovative and wide ranging mix of hardware,
software, SMS, phone or grid based tokens to ensure that any business’s authentication
framework strategy is fully covered.

Established in 1989 and with a proud heritage of technology and product leadership,
CRYPTOCard’s flagship product, CRYPTO- MAS, is the world’s first enterprise cloud-based
authentication platform, offering users the greatest management functionality and the
widest and most innovative range of tokens available on any cloud based authentication
service.
